“JEWEL OF HOPE” PROJECT

This project was to improve the lives and status of the underprivileged girls at the Kuala Kubu Bahru Sivananda Home through education, empowering and enabling opportunities. SICB planned to provide them with teachers and materials to enhance their ability to read and do simple mathematics and some skills like organic gardening, sewing and baking so that they can later use this knowledge to do some small business which will help supplement their income and be independent.

They were 22 girls living there and they came from broken homes. Their ages ranged from11 years to 18 years.  The project was launched on the 16 th July 2017.

We had an education team, a team of volunteers teaching the girls home science where they had cooking classes and sewing classes, a team-teaching vegetable farming to those who were interested. We also had university students coming to teach art and music. We had medical camps, counselling sessions for these girls and many more activities.

COMMENCEMENT

Started on the 23/4/2016 but officially launched the project on the 16/07/17 after a full analysis of the home was surveyed. The project was planned for 3 to 5 years which we decided to break up into 3 phases. Initial phase – 6 months (July 2017 – December 2017)

GOALS & OBJECTIVES
SICB will improve the lives and status of these girls through education, empowerment or enabling opportunities.
• Increase access to formal and non-formal learning opportunities.
• To actively educate the girls, to give them some psychological help and to empower them with coping skills.
• To Increase the self-esteem and confidence of these young girls who will become” Mothers of Tomorrow.”

These children were going to school but their education level was far below the standard. We decided that we should at least get these children to be able to communicate and do some amount of mathematics so that when they leave the home, they will be able to face the challenges of the outside world. We employed 2 teachers one of them taught them English and the other Mathematics. SICB was paying the teachers a token for their travelling expenses. The teachers were also doing charity work.
